MARS IN POLAND

Mars has four business segments in Poland: Chocolate, Wrigley, Food and Petcare. Mars has operated in Poland since 1992 and now is one of the largest companies in our sector in Poland. We are the leading pet care company and one of the key players in the confectionery market. We invest in and develop our factories in Kożuszki Parcel and Janaszówek in the Sochaczew area, and in our Warsaw offices, to ensure they become more sustainable.

Most of the products sold in Poland are made in our confectionery factory, pet food factories and WHISKAS® cat milk factory – the only such factory in our business.

Many Mars products manufactured in Poland are exported to other countries in Central and Western Europe, as well as the Middle East. In 2011, exports represented 43 percent of our turnover.

PRINCIPLES IN ACTION

Making a difference for people and the planet is second nature for Mars Poland Associates, both at work and at home.

Mars Poland was ranked fourth among fast moving consumer goods companies and 14th overall by the Responsible Business Forum in 2012. Additionally, Polityka magazine awarded Mars Poland a “Golden CSR leaf” – we were one of only 13 companies in Poland to receive this honor. We also ranked among the top ten Ideal Employers by Universum, a global branding firm, as defined by student surveys.

Our health program, Mars Wellness, motivates Associates and their families to be healthy. The program focuses on physical, mental and social well-being. Mars Wellness has been recognized by the European Commission's Directorate General for Health and Consumer Policy as the best European food industry program for promoting a healthy lifestyle.

We are active in the communities in which we operate and have helped to build playgrounds and parks throughout the country, as well as redecorating the children’s ward at Sochaczew Hospital.

Wrigley Poland continues to support the Trzemeszno orphanage with financial donations, by collecting school supplies and Christmas presents, and by organizing holiday events for the children who live there. In 2011, we launched a charity “walkathon” that encourages Associates to lead more active lifestyles while collecting money to support the Marcin Gortat foundation, which aims to help young people fulfill their sporting dreams. Royal Canin Polska participates in charity actions (“Szlachetna Paczka”) offering help and support to poor families from Niepołomice region. We also organize blood donation events and collaborate with Regional Center for Blood Donation in Krakow.

Our responsibility extends beyond local communities to the environment, where we are active in projects to help clean rivers and plant trees in local parks. In autumn 2011, Food and Petcare Associates planted 21,000 trees next to our facilities near Sochaczew, Wrigley Associates and their families planted hundreds of birch-trees in Poznan area, and Royal Canin Associates planted nearly a hundred trees on the Niepołomice site.

Increasing energy and waste efficiency is priority for the Wrigley factory in Poznan. Newly installed heat exchangers and energy-efficient cooling systems are driving down costs and negative environmental impacts. In our quest for a paperless office, we have reduced printed documents by 40 percent. Royal Canin Poland is committed to Mars’ “Sustainable in a Generation” program by working to reduce energy and water consumption. To reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, we have installed solar panels and a heat exchanger at our offices and invested in a boiler economizer. We have built a waste water treatment station to reduce effluent impacts, we segregate wastes and collaborate with companies which recycle plastic and wood. All of the waste from the Wrigley factory in Poznan is recycled or otherwise diverted from landfill and Mars Poland has already achieved the goal of zero waste to landfill.

Our sales teams make use of our fuel-efficient driving manual to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport. Royal Canin Poland also provides each sakes representative with special training to.

Royal Canin Poland is increasing the number of raw materials supplied locally and optimizing its supply chain to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Our "Go Green" program raises awareness about environmental issues and helps Associates to take small steps to reduce their impacts. We encouraged them to ride bikes, use public transportation and to print double-sided with black ink only. At Wrigley, we collect electronic waste from Associates’ households for safe disposal every six months. We also joined the worldwide event Earth Hour and switched off lights in our factory, office, and many of our Associates’ homes as a symbol of commitment to the environment.
